PhD and Doctoral Thesis Support

PhD and Doctoral Thesis Support for PhD, EdD, DBA, and DPhil Programs

A doctoral thesis is a sustained, original research contribution that extends the frontier of knowledge in your field. The UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Characteristics Statement for Doctoral Degrees states that "all doctoral graduates will have demonstrated an original contribution to knowledge in their subject, field, or profession, through original research or the original application of existing knowledge or understanding." This is the threshold that separates doctoral work from every other level: you are not demonstrating competence within an existing framework, you are producing new knowledge that did not exist before your research.

ScribeLabWriter provides PhD-led thesis support for doctoral researchers across all disciplines and formats. We support traditional monograph theses, thesis-by-publication format (including the kappa or framing chapter), and every professional doctorate variant: PhD, EdD, DBA, and DPhil. Single-chapter support starts from $300. Full thesis support and viva preparation are scoped individually based on the complexity of your project.

From $300 per chapter

Doctoral Degree Types and How They Differ

All doctorates require an original contribution, but the nature of that contribution, the structure of the thesis, and the career trajectory differ by degree type.

DegreeNature of ContributionTypical CandidateThesis Structure
PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)Original contribution to knowledge through new research, methodology, or theoryAspiring academic, postdoctoral researcher, or research-intensive professionalMonograph or thesis by publication
DPhil (Doctor of Philosophy)Equivalent to PhD. Used by Oxford and a small number of other universities.Same as PhDSame as PhD
EdD (Doctor of Education)Original contribution to professional practice in educationMid-career educator, school leader, or education administratorPractice-focused thesis, often with action research or case study methodology
DBA (Doctor of Business Administration)Original contribution to business practice through applied researchSenior executive, management consultant, or experienced business professionalApplied research thesis addressing a real organizational problem

The QAA states that all UK doctorates, regardless of form, require "an original contribution to knowledge." Professional and practice-based doctorates (EdD, DBA) situate professional knowledge within a theoretical and research framework. The contribution in a professional doctorate is to practice, policy, or professional knowledge rather than to pure theoretical advancement.

Thesis Word Counts by Country and Discipline

Doctoral thesis length varies significantly by country, institution, and discipline. These ranges are conventions and are subject to institutional caps.

Country / RegionTypical RangeVerified Institutional Caps
United Kingdom (humanities and social sciences)70,000 to 100,000 wordsUniversity of Cambridge: 80,000 words maximum (excluding bibliography and appendices)
United Kingdom (STEM)40,000 to 80,000 wordsSTEM theses are shorter because tables, figures, and equations carry information densely
United States80,000 to 120,000 wordsVaries by university and department. ProQuest ETD submission is the standard.
Australia70,000 to 100,000 wordsTEQSA sets the quality framework. Individual university regulations govern word limits.
Scandinavia (thesis by publication)3 to 5 published papers plus a kappa of 60 to 100 pagesNord University (Norway): kappa 60 to 100 pages. Karolinska Institutet (Sweden): kappa length not fixed but must contextualize all appended papers.

Always verify the word count requirement with your institution before beginning your thesis. These figures represent common ranges, not universal standards.

Monograph vs Thesis by Publication

Doctoral researchers choose between two thesis formats, and the choice affects the structure of every chapter.

The monograph is a single, cohesive document divided into chapters: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. This is the traditional format used in most UK, US, and Australian universities.

The thesis by publication (also called a compilation thesis, paper-based thesis, or "stapler thesis") consists of three to five published or submitted journal articles plus a framing chapter. This format is dominant in Scandinavian universities (Sweden, Norway, Finland) and widely accepted in the UK, Australia, Ireland, and Canada.

The framing chapter is known as the kappa in Scandinavian universities (literally "overcoat" in Swedish). Karolinska Institutet describes the compilation thesis as consisting of "a comprehensive summary (kappa) and separate constituent papers." The kappa must be composed independently and put the research findings into scientific context. It provides the overarching theoretical background, summarizes each appended paper, and clarifies the candidate's specific contribution to any co-authored work.

For co-authored papers, the University of Sheffield requires the candidate to "clearly explain the nature and extent of their contribution to each of the publications," with the expectation that the candidate is the primary contributor. The University of Manchester's Presentation of Theses Policy states that three to five papers or equivalent results chapters is typical.

We support both formats. For monograph theses, we provide chapter-by-chapter support. For thesis by publication, we help with individual papers, the kappa, and the overall framing and coherence of the thesis.

The Viva Voce and Doctoral Defense

The viva (UK) or defense (US, Australia) is the final examination of a doctoral thesis. The format differs by country.

CountryFormatDurationExaminers
United KingdomPrivate viva voce (oral examination)Typically 90 minutes to 3 hoursOne internal and one external examiner, sometimes with an independent chair
United StatesSemi-public presentation followed by closed committee sessionTypically 1 to 2 hoursCommittee of 4 to 5 faculty members
AustraliaWritten external examination (no viva in many programs)Varies. Some programs include an oral component. Two or three external examiners review the written thesis

UK viva outcomes follow a standard ladder:

Our defense and viva preparation service produces a comprehensive defense dossier including 15 to 25 anticipated examiner questions with model answers, a chapter-by-chapter summary, and a rapid-recall reference sheet.

PhD Completion Rates

Doctoral programs have significant non-completion rates. Understanding the statistics helps researchers plan realistically.

United Kingdom: A HEFCE analysis (published 2013) projected that 72.9% of full-time UK/EU doctoral starters in 2010-11 would qualify within 7 years, and 80.5% within 25 years.

United States: The Council of Graduate Schools' PhD Completion and Attrition study (2008), covering approximately 49,000 doctoral researchers at 30 institutions across 54 disciplines, reported a 10-year completion rate of 56.6%. By field: engineering 63.6%, life sciences 62.9%, social sciences 55.9%, mathematics and physical sciences 54.7%, and humanities 49.3%.

These figures are dated but remain the most widely cited benchmarks for doctoral completion. They underscore why structured support, realistic timelines, and consistent supervisor engagement are critical factors in successful thesis completion.

Typical doctoral timelines: UK PhD: 3 to 4 years full-time. US PhD: 5 to 7 years (includes coursework and qualifying examinations). Australia: 3 to 4 years full-time. EdD and DBA: typically 3 to 5 years part-time.

Accreditation and Quality Assurance Bodies

Doctoral programs are accredited and quality-assured by national and regional bodies. Understanding which body oversees your program helps you align your thesis with the standards your examiners apply.

United Kingdom: The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) sets doctoral standards through the Characteristics Statement for Doctoral Degrees and the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. The UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) provides guidance and resources for doctoral supervisors and researchers. Vitae supports researcher development across UK institutions.

Australia: The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) is the national quality assurance and regulatory body for higher education.

United States: Six regional accreditors oversee doctoral programs: the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), and Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

Dissertation submission: In the US, ProQuest ETD is the standard submission system for doctoral dissertations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an original contribution to knowledge?

An original contribution to knowledge is the core requirement of a doctoral thesis. The QAA defines it as producing new research, developing a new methodology, creating a new theory, or applying existing knowledge in a new way. Your contribution must be defensible to your examiners and must extend the frontier of knowledge in your field. It does not need to be paradigm-shifting. A well-defined, rigorously executed study that fills a specific gap in the literature qualifies as an original contribution.

What is the difference between a monograph thesis and a thesis by publication?

A monograph thesis is a single, cohesive document divided into traditional chapters (introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion). A thesis by publication consists of three to five published or submitted journal articles plus a framing chapter (the kappa) that provides the overarching theoretical context and clarifies the candidate's contribution. Both formats are accepted at most UK, Australian, and Scandinavian universities. The choice depends on your discipline, your supervisor's recommendation, and your institution's regulations.

What is a kappa in a thesis by publication?

The kappa (literally "overcoat" in Swedish) is the framing chapter in a Scandinavian compilation thesis. It provides the theoretical background, summarizes each appended paper, explains how the papers relate to each other, and clarifies the candidate's individual contribution to any co-authored work. Nord University (Norway) sets the kappa at 60 to 100 pages. The kappa must be written independently with minimal text overlap with the published papers.

How does the EdD differ from the PhD?

Both require an original contribution, but the nature of the contribution differs. A PhD produces an original contribution to knowledge through research that advances theoretical understanding. An EdD produces an original contribution to professional practice in education. EdD candidates are typically mid-career educators, school leaders, or education administrators. The EdD thesis is practice-focused and often uses action research, case study, or evaluation methodology.

What happens if I fail my viva?

Outright failure is extremely rare in the UK, occurring in approximately 0.1% of cases. The most common outcome for a thesis that does not meet the doctoral standard at viva is an award of a lower degree (MPhil) or a requirement for major corrections with re-examination. Minor corrections (the most common positive outcome) are typically completed within 1 to 3 months. If your examiners request corrections, our revision support service helps you address every point systematically.

How long does PhD thesis support take?

A single chapter typically takes 2 to 4 weeks due to the depth required at doctoral level. Multiple chapters take 4 to 8 weeks. A full thesis takes 8 to 16 weeks depending on scope, data complexity, and format (monograph vs thesis by publication). Kappa development typically takes 3 to 6 weeks. Defense and viva preparation takes 3 to 7 days after receiving your completed thesis.

Do you support international doctoral programs?

Yes. We serve doctoral researchers across the US, UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Europe, and internationally. We understand the regulatory and institutional requirements across different countries, including QAA standards (UK), TEQSA requirements (Australia), regional accreditor standards (US), SCFHS research proposal requirements (Saudi Arabia), and DHA/DOH/MOHAP frameworks (UAE). See our International Research Support page for details.

Can you help with a thesis that has already been started?

Yes. Many doctoral researchers come to us partway through their thesis when they encounter a specific challenge: a methodology chapter that needs restructuring, a literature review that needs critical depth, or a discussion chapter that does not articulate the contribution clearly. We integrate our support with your existing work and follow the direction your supervisor has set.
