Master's Dissertation Support
A Master's dissertation is a sustained piece of independent research that demonstrates your ability to formulate a research question, apply an appropriate methodology, analyze data critically, and present a structured argument grounded in existing literature. Unlike a PhD thesis, a Master's dissertation does not require an original contribution to knowledge. According to the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ Level 7), Master's graduates demonstrate "a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research or advanced scholarship" and "originality in the application of knowledge." Your dissertation proves that you can conduct rigorous, independent research within an established framework.
ScribeLabWriter provides PhD-led dissertation support for Master's researchers across all disciplines. We offer single-chapter support from $300 and full dissertation support from $1,200. Every project is led by a specialist with a doctoral degree and peer-reviewed publication experience in your field.
From $300 per chapter
Not all Master's dissertations are the same. The program type shapes the methodology, structure, and examiner expectations.
| Program | Typical Focus | Common Methodology | Typical Word Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSc (Master of Science) | Empirical research with quantitative or mixed-methods emphasis | Surveys, experiments, secondary data analysis, systematic reviews | 15,000 to 20,000 words (UK). 50 to 100 pages (US). |
| MA (Master of Arts) | Discursive, interpretive, and qualitative research | Thematic analysis, discourse analysis, case studies, interviews | 15,000 to 20,000 words (UK). 50 to 80 pages (US). |
| MBA (Master of Business Administration) | Applied business research, consultancy-style projects | Case study, action research, mixed methods, secondary data analysis | 12,000 to 20,000 words. Some AACSB programs accept shorter capstone projects. |
| MRes (Master of Research) | Research-methods training as preparation for doctoral study | Methods-heavy, often includes a systematic review or pilot study | 15,000 to 25,000 words. |
| MPhil (Master of Philosophy) | Closest to a doctoral thesis in scope and independence | Full research design, sometimes a stepping-stone with PhD upgrade | 30,000 to 40,000 words (varies significantly by institution). |
Word counts are conventions and vary by institution, country, and discipline. The University of Cambridge sets specific word limits by Degree Committee, with some MSc programs capped at 40,000 words and MPhil programs at 20,000 words. Always verify the word count requirement in your program handbook before beginning your dissertation.
Master's examiners assess whether your dissertation demonstrates five core competencies:
Comprehensive understanding of the subject. Your literature review must show that you have read widely, understand the key debates, and can position your research within the existing body of knowledge.
Appropriate methodology. Your methodology chapter must justify every design decision, not just label it. Why this philosophy? Why this approach? Why this sampling strategy? The Saunders Research Onion framework is the standard structure for methodology chapters in business, health, and social science programs.
Critical analysis. Examiners distinguish between description and critical analysis. Description tells the reader what happened. Critical analysis tells the reader what it means, why it matters, and how it connects to the broader literature.
Coherent argument. Your dissertation must read as a single, integrated argument from introduction through conclusion. The research questions stated in the introduction must be answered in the discussion. The methodology must align with the research philosophy. The literature review must build toward the gap your research addresses.
Technical competence. Correct referencing (APA 7th edition, Harvard, Vancouver, or your institution's required style), accurate data analysis, appropriate use of tables and figures, and professional writing throughout.
These are the issues that most frequently lead to referral, major corrections, or failure at Master's level:
Misalignment between aims, questions, and methodology. The research questions ask one thing, but the methodology measures something different. This is the most common structural failure.
Descriptive literature review. Summarizing sources one by one rather than synthesizing them thematically. Examiners at Master's level expect critical synthesis, not a list of what each author said.
Insufficient methodological justification. Stating "I used a qualitative approach" without explaining why qualitative methods are appropriate for your research question.
Weak data analysis. Presenting raw data without interpretation, or running statistical tests without explaining what they mean in the context of your research questions.
Over-reliance on secondary sources. Using textbooks and review articles rather than engaging with primary research. Examiners expect to see engagement with the original studies.
Poor time management. The discussion and conclusion chapters are often the weakest because they are written last, under time pressure. These are the chapters where examiners assess your analytical ability.
| Country | Classification System | Top Grade |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Distinction, Merit, Pass, Fail | Distinction (typically 70%+) |
| United States | Letter grades (A through F) or Pass/Fail | A or Pass (varies by program) |
| Australia | High Distinction, Distinction, Credit, Pass, Fail | High Distinction (HD, typically 85%+) |
Most UK taught Master's programs do not require a viva (oral defense). The dissertation is assessed through marked submission by one or two examiners. In the US, a committee defense is common. In Australia, the format varies by program. Verify your program's defense requirements before your submission deadline.
UK taught Master's programs (MSc, MA, MBA) typically assess the dissertation through written examination only. One or two markers grade the submitted work and provide written feedback. An oral defense is not standard at this level.
US Master's programs more commonly require a committee defense, where the researcher presents the dissertation and responds to questions from a panel of faculty members.
Australian Master's programs vary by institution and program type. Research-focused programs (MPhil, MRes) are more likely to include a defense component than taught programs.
If your program includes a defense component, our defense and viva preparation service produces a comprehensive defense dossier with anticipated examiner questions, model answers referencing specific pages in your dissertation, and a rapid-recall reference sheet.
Your Master's program may be accredited by a professional body that sets specific standards for the dissertation:
Understanding your program's accreditation body helps you align your dissertation with the standards your examiners are measuring against.

A Master's dissertation demonstrates your ability to conduct independent research within an established framework. It requires comprehensive understanding, critical analysis, and competent application of methods. A PhD thesis must make an original contribution to knowledge, which is a higher threshold requiring new research, a new methodology, or a new theoretical perspective. The QAA Framework for Higher Education Qualifications defines these distinctions at FHEQ Level 7 (Master's) and Level 8 (Doctoral).
We use whatever citation style your institution requires. This includes APA 7th edition (dominant in health sciences, psychology, education, and nursing), Harvard (standard in UK and Australian universities), Vancouver (common in medicine and clinical research), Chicago/Turabian (used in some social science programs), and institutional-specific style guides. Tell us your required style in the enquiry and we follow it exactly.
Supervisor feedback is incorporated at no additional cost. Our unlimited revision policy means we continue revising until your supervisor is satisfied, your committee approves, or your institution accepts the work. There are no revision caps within the original scope.
Yes. We serve Master's researchers across the US, UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and internationally. We understand the institutional requirements, formatting standards, and regulatory frameworks across these regions. See our International Research Support page for country-specific details.
